Great post Dr. Byl!

I'm wondering if anyone has written a book that thoroughly documents some of the bias and politically/ideologically motivated filtering that happens in scientific publications?

I appreciated the comment at the end about the interpretation of data and the involvement of worldview as well. Not too many people talk at that level. It's strange to me how many Christians in the scientific realm somehow think they don't have a worldview, or that the noetic effects of sin can be shed when one enters a labratory. The Armchair Theologianhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00316831437599309212noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3772414331480635861.post-58693227966424098542010-02-01T11:55:53.621-08:002010-02-01T11:55:53.621-08:00Hi Fred

Hull argues that scientific progress is evolutionary in the sense that scientific ideas or papers that are most successful are those that are most widely cited, like successful species being those that leave the most offspring. To have one's papers widely read, it helps greatly if one has an established reputation of being trustworthy. Since scientists greatly desire recognition, they are motivated to publish honest data.

I believe this is, to a large extent, true. One surmises that most fabricated experimental results would eventually be revealed as such due to subsequent research.

What is much more difficult to overcome is bias due to the dominant worldview of the larger scientific community. Simply because a particular explanatory theory survives in the scientific community is no guarantee of its ultimate truthfulness.John Bylnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3772414331480635861.post-14691054404598171832010-01-30T05:49:39.606-08:002010-01-30T05:49:39.606-08:00A potentially interesting read related to this: Da...A potentially interesting read related to this: David Hull's Science as a Process. Working within the evolutionary framework, he argues that although papers are biased and journal selection committees are fickle, the overall process moves ahead. It would be very interesting to hear your thoughts on this theory.

http://www.press.uchicago.edu/presssite/metadata.epl?mode=synopsis&bookkey=3618159Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
